COMICPAD vs Dashtoon (2026): The Honest Head-to-Head

From the people who built COMICPAD. We rank Dashtoon #1 in our own listicle, so the answer to “which is better?” depends on your specific job — and we tell you which one honestly.

Editorial disclosure: COMICPAD is our own product. This is a comparison written by one of the two parties. We rank ourselves #2 of 10 in our main /best-ai-comic-generators benchmark — behind Dashtoon — and this page does not flip that ranking.

In one paragraph

Dashtoon and COMICPAD are both leading AI comic generators in 2026. In our own /best-ai-comic-generators benchmark we rank Dashtoon #1 and COMICPAD #2. Dashtoon Studio is the creator app inside the Dashtoon reading platform (Dashverse ecosystem); COMICPAD is a standalone creation tool with no reading platform attached. Pick Dashtoon if character consistency on long manga/webtoon series is your top priority and you're comfortable with their reading platform as a default home for the work. Pick COMICPAD if you want public pricing, 11-style breadth, shorter time-to-finished-comic, the Custom tier (21-400 pages), or full export freedom with no platform attachment. The “Dashtoon 10-year exclusive contract” concern you may have read about is real but applies to their separate Authors Program book-adaptation pipeline, not the Studio free image tier.

First: are these even the same kind of product?

Before comparing features it's worth knowing what each thing actually is — they're built on different assumptions.

Dashtoon Studio

The AI comic creator app inside the broader Dashtoon ecosystem. The parent company Dashverse also operates Dashtoon (the consumer reading app for webcomics, manga, manhwa), DashReels, and Frameo.AI. Studio is the creator side; the reader side is where comics get distributed by default.

Translation: you create + a reading platform comes attached.

COMICPAD

A standalone AI comic creation tool. No in-house reading platform. You make a comic, export it as a PDF or PNG, and publish wherever you want — WEBTOON Canvas, Tapas, KDP, Substack, your own site, or just print it as a gift.

Translation: you create + you choose where it lives.

The honest head-to-head matrix

No fake “winner” badges. Each row states what each tool actually does. Pick the axes that matter to you and judge the trade-offs.

Where Dashtoon honestly wins

Four specific dimensions where Dashtoon is the better pick — not vague handwaving. These reflect our own benchmark.

Character consistency on long sequences

Dashtoon's character training step is the strongest in our benchmark. For a 40-page webtoon arc where one protagonist appears in every episode, Dashtoon's LoRA-style training delivers more consistent recurring characters than COMICPAD does. If consistency is your #1 axis, this is where Dashtoon wins.

Generous free generation volume

100 images/day on the free Studio tier is the most generous permanent free allowance in the category. If you want to experiment heavily before paying, Dashtoon's free tier outlasts everyone else's.

In-house reading platform

Dashtoon is the largest in-house webtoon-AI reading ecosystem — if your goal is to publish where AI-comic readers already are, this platform attachment is a feature, not a bug. COMICPAD has no reading platform; you bring your own (WEBTOON Canvas, Tapas, KDP, your own site).

Funded roadmap

Dashverse raised a $13M Series A from Peak XV in August 2025. The category is institutionally validated, and the parent company is investing across DashReels and Frameo.AI in addition to Studio. COMICPAD is independent and smaller; if institutional backing matters to your risk tolerance, Dashtoon wins on this.

Where COMICPAD honestly wins

Six dimensions where we're the stronger pick — each one specific and verifiable.

Time to a finished comic

A 4-page short comic from prompt to exported PDF takes about 6 minutes in COMICPAD. Dashtoon's character training step adds time before generation begins — high-quality output but a longer first-comic flow. For a gift comic, a quick test, or any short-form work, COMICPAD is faster.

Pricing transparency

Starter $6.99, Plus $19.99, Pro $54.99 — all listed on /pricing. Dashtoon Studio's paid pricing is not publicly listed on dashtoon.com as of June 23, 2026. If you want to know exactly what you'll pay before signing up, COMICPAD is verifiable; Dashtoon isn't.

Multi-style range

11 distinct art styles in one tool — Manga, Anime, Manhwa, Superhero, Sci-Fi, Noir, Fantasy, Manhua, Seinen, Comedy, Horror. Dashtoon's model is webtoon/manga-leaning. If you want noir or superhero or horror in the same library as manga, COMICPAD covers more ground.

Custom tier — 21 to 400 pages in one job

Our Custom tier renders 21-400 pages in a single generation job with a 20,000-character story prompt and planning phase. For book-length projects (memoirs, family histories, graphic novels), this is uncommon in the category. Dashtoon Studio works page-by-page; long form requires stitching many sessions.

No platform attachment

COMICPAD is a standalone creator tool. No reading platform, no in-house monetization to mix in, no ecosystem dependency. You make the comic, you keep the file, you publish it wherever fits — or just hand it to the person you made it for.

Support response time

We're smaller than Dashtoon, which means support response is faster. If you write us, a human responds in hours, not days. For a smaller team this is structurally easier to maintain.

The Authors Program question — separating two different things

Most existing “Dashtoon comparison” pages conflate two different things, so the contract concern reads scarier than the reality. Here is the actual separation.

Dashtoon Studio (the free image tier)

The AI image generation app. Free plan: 100 images/day, 1 character training/day, ongoing. Operates under Dashtoon's public Terms & Conditions — non-exclusive license, rights for Studio-generated images remain with the user. No 10-year clause appears in the public ToS as of June 23, 2026.

Dashtoon's Authors Program (book adaptation licensing)

A separate pipeline where authors license existing IP (e.g., a novel) for Dashtoon to adapt into webtoons. Writer Beware reviewed a draft contract on May 10, 2024 and documented two paths: 10-year irrevocable exclusive at 15% net-profit royalty, or non-exclusive at 50% net-profit with 60-day termination. The current dashtoon.com/publish FAQ explicitly states authors are free to host comics on other platforms even when publishing with Dashtoon, and that contracts are negotiated individually by their licensing team.

Practical translation: if you're using Studio's free tier to make a webtoon you'll publish on WEBTOON Canvas or your own site — the 10-year exclusive thing isn't triggered. If Dashtoon approaches you about adapting a book series under their Authors Program, read the actual contract you're offered and consider a literary agent.

Decision tree — which one fits your specific job

Eight common use cases. Honest answer for each.

One-off gift comic in under an hour

→ Pick COMICPAD

Fastest from brief to finished comic in our benchmark — ~6 minutes for a 4-page comic.

Serial webtoon publishing where the Dashtoon reader audience matters

→ Pick Dashtoon

Their in-platform reading audience is the in-house distribution channel; alternatives require separate publishing to WEBTOON Canvas, Tapas, or your own site.

Commercial work for paying clients

→ Pick COMICPAD

Public pricing is easier to bill; no platform ecosystem dependency; no exclusivity ever requested.

100+ page graphic novel in one generation job

→ Pick COMICPAD

Custom tier accepts 21-400 pages in a single job. Dashtoon Studio works page-by-page.

Character consistency is the top criterion

→ Pick Dashtoon

Strongest in our benchmark. Their character training step yields the most consistent multi-page output of any tool we tested.

Multiple distinct art styles in one library

→ Pick COMICPAD

11 styles in the same tool — Manga, Anime, Manhwa, Superhero, Sci-Fi, Noir, Fantasy, Manhua, Seinen, Comedy, Horror.

Generous free generation volume to experiment

→ Pick Dashtoon

100 images/day on the free tier is the most generous in the category.

Want to know exactly what you'll pay before signing up

→ Pick COMICPAD

Pricing is on /pricing; Dashtoon Studio paid pricing is not on dashtoon.com as of June 2026.

Pricing reality, both sides

COMICPAD

  • Free trial — covers a complete first comic, then paid
  • Starter $6.99/mo — 2,000 coins (~2 medium comics or ~1 long)
  • Plus $19.99/mo — 6,000 coins (~5 medium comics)
  • Pro $54.99/mo — 20,000 coins (~16 medium comics or one 200-page graphic novel)
  • Coin packs — $4.99 to $39.99 for one-off top-ups

All public on /pricing.

Dashtoon Studio

  • Free — 100 images/day, 1 character training/day, ongoing
  • Paid Studio plans — not publicly listed on dashtoon.com as of June 23, 2026
  • Third-party reports mention figures from ~$10/month to ~$27 one-time, but none of these appear on Dashtoon's own pricing page — we can't verify them

Honest framing: COMICPAD's pricing is verifiable. Dashtoon Studio's paid pricing is opaque.

What's new in 2026 for both products

  • Dashverse $13M Series A from Peak XV (August 2025) — institutional validation for the AI-comic category. No new Studio feature publicly announced in 2026 H1.
  • COMICPAD Custom tier launched — 21-400 pages per generation job, 20,000-character story prompt, planning phase before render. See /custom-comic-book.
  • USCO Part 2 (January 29, 2025) clarified that purely AI-generated output isn't copyrightable without meaningful human authorship. Affects both tools' users equally.
  • Midjourney V8.1 (April 30, 2026) and Niji 7 (January 9, 2026) shifted the broader landscape — but neither COMICPAD nor Dashtoon use these models. Mentioned here only because they affect how readers think about “best AI for comics.”

Frequently asked questions

Is Dashtoon really free?

Yes for Studio's free tier — Dashtoon Studio gives 100 images per day and one character training per day on the free plan, sustained ongoing. Paid Studio pricing is not publicly listed on dashtoon.com as of June 2026; third-party reviews mention different figures but none appear on Dashtoon's own pricing page. Sources: TCK Publishing's Dashtoon Studio review; dashtoon.com (no pricing page visible).

Does using Dashtoon's free tier lock me into a 10-year contract?

No. This is the most common misconception. Dashtoon's Studio image generation (the creator app) operates under Dashtoon's general Terms & Conditions — non-exclusive license, rights for Studio-generated images remain with the user. The "10-year irrevocable exclusive contract with 15% net-profit royalty" that Writer Beware critiqued on May 10, 2024 was for Dashtoon's separate Authors Program — a book-adaptation licensing pipeline where authors license existing IP for Dashtoon to adapt into webtoons. That contract had two paths: 10-year exclusive at 15% net profit, or non-exclusive at 50% net profit with 60-day termination. It is not triggered by Studio free-tier image generation. As of June 2026, Dashtoon has not publicly updated the Writer Beware boilerplate. If you're approached for the Authors Program, read the actual contract carefully or get a literary agent involved.

Which has better character consistency?

Dashtoon, by a margin, in our /best-ai-comic-generators benchmark. Dashtoon's character training step is the strongest in the category for maintaining a named character's appearance across many pages. COMICPAD's consistency (up to 6 named characters per comic) is strong but does not match Dashtoon's LoRA-trained approach for long-form serial work.

Can I export from both?

Yes. COMICPAD outputs HD PDF and PNG with commercial-use rights on paid plans. Dashtoon Studio outputs in multiple formats, and per Dashtoon's current public ToS rights for images created with Studio remain with the user. Both let you use the output commercially.

Can I publish a Dashtoon Studio comic elsewhere — WEBTOON Canvas, KDP, my own site?

Per Dashtoon's current public publish FAQ: yes. Dashtoon explicitly states you are free to host your comics on other platforms even if you publish with Dashtoon. This is separate from the Authors Program book-adaptation pipeline, which has its own contract terms. For Studio-generated comics, your output is yours to distribute.

Does COMICPAD have a permanent free tier?

No — COMICPAD has a free trial that covers a complete first comic, then paid plans start at $6.99/month (Starter). We don't claim permanent-free because that's not what we offer. For genuinely permanent free access, Dashtoon's 100-images/day Studio tier is the most generous in the category.

Which produces a comic faster?

COMICPAD, on average, in our benchmark. A 4-page short comic finishes in about 6 minutes from prompt to PDF. Dashtoon Studio's workflow includes a character training step that adds time before image generation begins — high quality output, but a longer first-comic flow. For a quick gift or short strip, COMICPAD is faster. For a long serial where the character training amortizes across many episodes, Dashtoon's flow becomes worth the upfront step.

What happens if Dashtoon changes its terms in the future?

Fair question — any tool can change its terms. Two general practices that protect you regardless of which tool you use: (1) download your finished comics as files you own (PDF or PNG export); (2) keep your source prompts/scripts in a separate document so you can re-generate elsewhere if needed. Both COMICPAD and Dashtoon currently allow export. As of June 2026, Dashtoon's public ToS keeps Studio image rights with the user.

Try the one that fits your job

No shame in picking either. Both tools are legitimate. The right choice depends on your specific job — and we hope this page made that clearer rather than muddier.
